1st Quarter
RI.5.2 – Determine two or more main ides of a text and explain how they are supported by key details
RI.5.1 - Draw inferences, conclusions, and generalizations about text and support with prior knowledge
L.5.2d – use underlining, quotations marks, or italics to indicate titles of works.
Rl.5.4 – determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.
2nd Quarter
RI.5.5 -Identify and compare the following text structures: chronology, comparison, cause/effect, description
RI.5.8 - Identify the causes of events in a nonfiction account
RL.5.4, L.5.5 - Identify and explain examples of figurative language (metaphor, simile, and idiom)
3rd Quarter
W.3b – Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations. (Emphasis on correct use of quotation marks)
RL.5.3, RL.5.9, RI 5.5 - Compare and contrast between selections to improve comprehension
RL.5.6 – Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influence how events are described
4th Quarter
L.5.4b - Determine the meaning of an unknown word using knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and word roots (e.g. using the knowledge of the suffix –ian to determine the meaning of guardian)
RF.5.4 - Will improve fluency from beginning of year to the end of the year
W.5.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly
Show evidence in writings of focus and support as used on the ISAT rubric. (5 W 1b)
Use basic transition words to connect ideas and writings (5 W 1c, 5 W 2c, 5 W 3c)
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the information or explanation presented. (5 W 1d, 5 W 2e)
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing (5 L 2)
Use a variety of sentence structures. (5 L 3a) – move this to 4th quarter and include in the essay rubric
