5th Grade Engineers
West Central 5th graders have been learning about the engineering process. They began with the problem solving stage of figuring out how to make a paper rocket that could be launched from the provided launcher and that would travel at least 90 feet. They had many unique ideas about how to build them! Some used water bottles, some used cardboard, and others just used paper. During the test flight, data was collected then students had an opportunity to evaluate the performance of their rockets and make some changes. Most of them figured out that if they used a slimmer, lighter design, and more tape to stop air leaks, then their rocket would travel further. After the final test, students reflected on the success of the project.
